Canning Jar Find

My mother canned a lot of food, mostly salmon, mincemeat, jam and jelly, and some other stuff that I can't remember. After she passed away, I got her pressure canner and all her jars. One of my favorite jars of hers were the Ball 1- 1/2 pint jars. She only had a case of 12, and I loved their size. Sometimes, one pint isn't quite enough, and a quart it too much. They have been precious to me over the years, and they have been continually filled with various goodies from peaches and pears to chili. I always process my food in these jars for the longer time required for quart jars, and have never had a problem.

I went shopping today and I couldn't believe my eyes! Ball 1-1/2 pint jars just sitting there staring at me. Well, I couldn't resist. No, they were not on sale and you only get 9 jars in a case. But I just had to buy one case. I will purchase more when they go on sale. As you can see from the picture, my original box on the right is old and well used. Give this size jar a try.  I think you will love these jars, too.

  1. i know how attached we can get to our jars...years ago, while working in rural county medical homecare, i would pass old barns and falliing down sheds wondering why they were abandoned and let go fallow. then i got the bright idea of finding the owners and getting their permission to do some junkin in those barns and sheds...i have so many canning jars from those trips..folks would just quit canning or whatever, but instead of throwing the jars away they would just box them up and store them in those barns...and then for years they would sit there forgotten. i have those 1 1//2 pint jars, some great 2 quart jars and even some 1/2 gallon jars...lids are hard to find sometimes for the real odd ones but then i repurpose them for something else. i dont think i will ever be short of canning jars..

    1. Don't you just love those treasures we can find from old places that hold secrets from the past. Keep those jars, they are a valuable commodity.

  2. Where did you find them? I have been looking everywhere and can't find them.

  3. Here in the PNW, we have a store called Bi-Mart. That is where I found the 1-1/2 pint jars. I am sure most stores should be carrying them. Maybe check out Walmart or your local home and garden store. I love this size. Good luck, I hope you find them soon!
